CLINICAL SELECTION & BUYING GUIDE

Allis Forceps Buying & Specification Guide

Allis forceps hold tissue firmly, so they are chosen for tissue that will be removed or that can tolerate a strong grip. For delicate tissue such as bowel, surgeons usually prefer a Babcock or an atraumatic Allis. When choosing, look at:

  • Teethfewer, larger teeth (3x4, 4x5) give a strong grip on dense tissue. More, finer teeth (5x6, 6x7, or 9x10 on the Allis-Adair) spread the grip and mark the tissue less.
  • Length6″ for superficial work, 7½″ – 8″ for general and abdominal surgery, 10″ – 12″ for deep cavities and gynaecological procedures.
  • PatternBaby Allis is smaller and finer for delicate or paediatric work. Allis-Adair has broader jaws with many fine teeth. Heavy patterns suit tough tissue.
  • Laparoscopicfor keyhole surgery, choose Allis grasping inserts in 5 mm or 10 mm sheath sizes.

Most general surgery sets carry several 6″ and 7½″ Allis forceps.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Allis Forceps

What are Allis forceps used for?

They grasp and hold firm tissue such as fascia, skin edges and tissue that will be removed, in general, abdominal, gynaecological and breast surgery.

What is the difference between Allis and Babcock forceps?

Allis forceps have interlocking teeth for a firm grip. Babcock forceps have smooth, rounded jaws that are gentler, so they are preferred for delicate tissue like bowel and fallopian tubes.

What do 4x5 or 5x6 teeth mean?

It is the number of teeth on each jaw. Fewer, larger teeth grip harder. More, finer teeth spread the pressure and mark the tissue less.

What is an Allis-Adair forceps?

It is a variation with wider jaws and many fine teeth, often 9x10. It holds tissue securely with less trauma than a standard Allis.

Are Allis forceps traumatic to tissue?

Standard Allis forceps can damage delicate tissue, which is why they are mainly used on firm tissue or tissue being removed. Atraumatic Allis and Babcock forceps are gentler options.

Do you supply laparoscopic Allis forceps?

Yes. We supply Allis grasping inserts and full modular systems in 5 mm and 10 mm sheath diameters.
